For the first census of the Russian Empire in 1897, the famous chemist Dmitri Mendeleev made a long-term forecast of Russia's demographic development, according to which the population of Russia at the end of the twentieth century would be about 0.6 billion people, and by the mid-twenty-first century, it would be more than a billion people. By 1913, the population of the Russian Empire was already 7.8 % of the world’s one-and-a-half billion population. However, after 1917—population growth rate in Russia fell sharply.
The demographic situation in the country deteriorated further after the collapse of the Soviet Union in late 1991. Russia’s population decreased and the country entered into a protracted period of depopulation between 1999 and 2008. The average losses reached 580,000 people a year. Such unprecedented speed of depopulation happened without world wars, epidemics, and natural disasters. If this trend continues, by 2050 Russia will account for less than 1% of the world’s population. Why is this happening? The answer to this question is in this book.
The Price Russians Pay Abstracts eBook Vladimir Zakharov
The book “The Price Russians Pay” is very interesting and informative. I did not read anything like that before. It has unique contents. Usually authors do not like to deal with national distinguishing characteristics because this topic is extremely sensitive and even provocative. Some representatives of the described nation may be insulted.Among the main pluses of this book is solid and even encyclopedic erudition of the author. Very impressive is his basic psychological approach – the price of human life as an indicator of national successes and achievements.
Among minuses, I found too much negative information about what happened in Russia in the XX-XXI centuries. Usually people accept new information when it is balanced – positive-negative and the amount of positive information should be more than amount of negative. Another minus – book is written in Russian and for Russian speaking readers mainly but is placed on the Amazon WEB Sites that are not specializing on Slavic customers. English abstract of the book is a little bit schematic. Full English translation need to be done. In addition, the language of the book is half-scientific, half-popular.
